EGR270 students, Continuum Mechanics I, produced some amazing videos for one of their assignments. They had to work in groups of 3-4 students and produce a 3-4 minute educational video on how materials behave when subjected to loading. This project supports the overall focus of the Engineering Department at Smith, to encourage a learner-centered program where students take control of their own learning.

Having a great camcorder gives you a great tool to shoot amazing videos. But that alone does not guarantee great results. With time and experience you would obviously figure out what works or not but then you will have to spend a lot of time and do a lot of mistakes before you get it right. If you are just starting out it is better to learn some basic video shooting skills to help you shoot good quality videos.
If you are just starting out, using the Zooming-In feature is what you will need to keep under control. It is something which everybody tries to over-use when starting out. You won’t even realize it why you use zoom but everybody does that mistake of over-using the zoom feature.
You may think that it is a cool thing to use but when you sit back to watch the video, you will realize that more than enhancing the video, it actually distracts the viewers. Even if you want to do it, use it sparingly and do it slowly; it looks much better than doing it quickly.
Another important thing to keep in mind is to keep the video camera steady. This is necessary to ensure that you have smoothness in your videos. Again, this is something which you will get better at with practice. If, in the meantime you have to shoot something important where you want the quality to be very good, go in for a tripod. A tripod will ensure you get far better results, so it makes sense to go in for one. Professionals use tripod for most of their video shootings.
The most important thing to keep in mind is to make sure that you have proper lighting. You may not realize the importance of it initially, but when you see the results for yourself, you will understand how important it is to have proper lighting. It can easily ruin your captured footage. An important think to remember is to always shoot with the light source on the object or person, and not on the camcorder.
